Happy Mother’s Day!

My Mother’s Day was quiet this year. My eldest son was at a birthday party sleepover, my youngest was at the grandparent’s house and my husband was moving my mother to Vancouver. When we were finally back together, my boys were anxious to give me the gifts they had made at school. My husband said, “Sorry I didn’t get you anything.” I looked at the little treasures my boys had presented to me so proudly, their faces beaming at me with love, and thought, “What more do I need?”

I’m a sucker for all the “stuff” teachers send home from school. I have bins stacked full of every drawing, every worksheet, and every craft. But, after receiving my Mother’s Day treasures this year, I realize I’m going to have to have different colored bins for the really important things I want to save. Or maybe I’ll call the bin, “Things that made me cry.” I made it about halfway through each of these poems before tearing up.

From my 6-year-old:

When I was looking at the picture, my son piped up, "That's me." It was all I could do not to burst out laughing!

Dear Mom,
This gift holds tiny treasures
That remind me of you,
To say, Happy Mother’s Day”,
And thanks for loving me too!

Piece of Gum – because we are “stuck” together forever
Safety Pin – because you always keep me safe
Clothes Pin – for all the hard work you do around the house
Warm Fuzzy Cloth – for how cozy I am in your arms
Shiny Penny – for always wanting to know my thoughts
Eraser – because you forgive my mistakes, big and small
Smiley Face – for making me happy when skies seem gray
Piece of Tissue – for all my tears you dry away
A Beautiful Jewel – because you are so precious to our family
Little Red Heart – because I will love you always!

From my 4-year-old:

Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints
On furniture and walls.

But every day I’m growing…
I’ll be grown up someday
And all those tiny handprints
Will surely fade away.

So here’s a final handprint
Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked
When I was very small.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you amazing Moms out there! What were some of the simple moments today that reminded you how much you are loved?

I’m right there with you Manda. All the sweet poems and cards from the kids made me cry too. The seemed puzzled by my reaction but Doug explained that those were happy tears.
